eq vs iq

How Emotionally Iintelligent Ar You?

April 26, 20252 min read

There is a big difference between IQ and EQ. To unlock your full potential it’s necessary to develop your EQ and to use it alongside your IQ. Let me explain…

Hey there! Fiona May here, founder of Women On Transition. As someone who's passionate about helping people create more powerful and fulfilling lives, I'm always eager to share insights on the things that contribute to our overall success and well-being.

You know, a lot of people put a ton of emphasis on IQ - that good ol' general intelligence that gets measured through standardized tests. And don't get me wrong, having strong cognitive abilities is valuable. But there's another form of intelligence that I believe is just as (if not more) important: emotional intelligence, or EQ.

Emotional intelligence encompasses all those interpersonal and intrapersonal skills - things like self-awareness, empathy, and social skills. It's about being able to recognize, understand, and manage our emotions in a way that allows us to navigate challenges, build meaningful connections, and make decisions that align with our values.

Unlike IQ, which tends to be relatively fixed, emotional intelligence is something that can actually be developed and improved over time. And the payoff is huge - research shows that people with high EQ are more likely to excel in their careers, maintain healthy relationships, and generally live more fulfilling lives.

But here's the thing: just having knowledge or skills doesn't automatically make us emotionally intelligent. It's about taking that knowledge and putting it into consistent action. You know that saying, "knowing and not doing is the same as not knowing"? Well, that really rings true when it comes to EQ.

I've seen it happen time and time again - people who are brilliant on paper, but struggle to make real progress because they get tripped up by self-doubt, procrastination, or an inability to manage their emotions. That's where the real power of emotional intelligence comes in. When we can draw on those EQ skills to overcome those internal obstacles, we unlock our full potential.

So while IQ is certainly important, I'd argue that developing our emotional intelligence is equally (if not more) crucial, especially in today's complex, fast-paced world. By combining a strong cognitive foundation with a well-honed EQ, we're able to translate our knowledge into meaningful action and create the kind of life we truly want.

It's a lifelong journey, for sure, but one that's so worth embarking on. If you're ready to start exploring your emotional intelligence and taking your life to the next level, reach out - I'd be honoured to chat more and share some of the tools and strategies I've seen make a real difference.

Wishing you all the best,

Fiona
