As a life coach, so much of my work involves understanding the roots of limiting beliefs and behaviour patterns that hold us back from experiencing real joy and fulfillment.
More often than not, these patterns can be traced all the way back to childhood - a time when societal expectations had yet to influence a person's natural instincts for play, curiosity and simply being.
For many driven, high-achieving women I see, their incessant need for productivity and perfectionism began when they were just little girls. To feel loved and be rewarded in their family, they needed to be “high achievers” and be recognised as being “successful”. The subconscious pressure this put on them set them up in a lifetime pattern of striving to please their parents and be recognised by them.
Subconsciously, they learned equating their worth with accomplishments was the only way to feel safe, secure and lovable. Over time, that mentality calcified as a way of navigating the world without ever questioning its origins or impacts.
But ladies, you each deserve so much more than an identity founded on what you can cross off your never-ending to-do lists. Take a moment to access that vibrant, curious little girl within who learned to view rainstorms as joyful dancing instead of something to hide from.
Recall how to immerse yourself fully in play without judgment or worrying what others might think. Give yourself permission to color outside the lines, get lost in imagination and simply live in the present moment once again.
The world will still turn without your constant achievements or need to have all the answers. Perhaps it's time to rediscover balance by incorporating more spontaneous fun into your routines, whether through time with loved ones, hobbies, being active in nature or adventuring someplace new just for the experience of it!
You each hold an innate light and wonder that needs nurturing through play as much as productivity.
So I challenge you - embrace your inner wild child again and remember why puddles were once so irresistible. Your worth has never relied on what you do or don't cross off a list.
Now go... STOP WORKING so hard and start creating a life full of fun and adventure!
