Are the Stories You Tell Keeping You Stuck?
Have you ever really noticed the stories you tell about yourself?
Are they mostly about what hurt you?
About who let you down?
About the moments that broke your heart or changed you forever?
For a long time, I lived that way too.
I found myself repeatedly telling the story of childhood disappointments… of friendships that didn’t feel safe… of the man I believed would love me unconditionally — and didn’t. At first, I thought I was sharing my pain to release it. But slowly, I realised something uncomfortable.
I was using those stories to justify who I had become.
My pain wasn’t just something I’d experienced — it had become my identity. And every time someone listened, nodded, or reacted, it reinforced that version of me. I wasn’t just a woman who had been hurt. I had cast myself as the heroine of suffering… and unknowingly invited others to play supporting roles in keeping that story alive.
That realisation stopped me in my tracks.
Because one day I woke up feeling nothing but emptiness — and I didn’t like the woman I had become. I didn’t want her to be the lead character in my life story anymore. I wanted to feel confident. Peaceful. Grounded. Happy.
And that’s when I made a decision — not for anyone else, but for myself.
A decision to change my perspective.
A decision to stop letting pain define me.
A decision to become a new version of myself.
So I want to gently ask you:
Do you talk about your pain often?
Do you feel justified in your suffering when you do?
Do these experiences feel like the core of who you are?
Do you replay them so often they almost feel familiar — even comforting?
If you described yourself, would these stories shape your identity?
If you answered “yes” to even one of these questions, you’re not weak — you’re human. And like I once was, you may be holding onto these stories because letting go feels like betrayal.
But ask yourself this:
Who are you betraying by releasing them?
Not your past.
Not your truth.
Not yourself.
Your painful experiences are something that happened to you — they are not who you are.
When you release these stories, you don’t lose yourself. You reclaim your energy. You create space for new stories — ones rooted in strength, clarity, peace, and self-belief.
There is a version of you that feels confident, calm, and whole.
And she is waiting for you to choose her.
You can take the first step today.
But only you can decide to do it.
Because the stories you tell will create your life — one way or the other.
